VOLUNTEER NEEDED – Star Trek Online Advisory Council
April 8th, 2010
Atari and Cryptic Studios are forming an informal group of Star Trek and gaming fans to provide input on the development of STO., and they’ve asked STARFLEET to provide at least one volunteer to sit on the Council.
“THE STAR TREK ONLINE ADVISORY COUNCIL is an informal group of Star Trek and gaming fans who have been tapped to provide input on the development of STO. Based on Earth in the Sol System, the Council will also become ambassadors for their readers, viewers and followers who want to provide suggestions and tips on how STAR TREK ONLINE’s 25th Century storyline might further evolve.”
They’ve asked STARFLEET to provide at least one volunteer to sit on the Council. This member needs to have the following qualifications:
1) Be a member of STARFLEET who will be sticking around for a while. (If the member leaves STARFLEET, chances are that person will need to be replaced on the Council.)
2) Be an active player in the Star Trek Online game. (This would seem pretty obvious.)
3) Respect the fact that Star Trek is a business and Atari is a CBS licensee. (While I am certain that the atmosphere of this Council will be friendly and fun, this is also a very serious business endeavor. Star Trek Online cost millions of dollars to develop and market. The ideas for improving, evolving, and promoting the game that the council comes up with must work in the real world. Not all ideas will hit the mark or even be tried…so check you ego at the door if you volunteer.)
Anyone wanting to volunteer for the position as STARFLEET’s representative on this Advisory Council must be mature and professional.
No tantrums. No ultimatums. No threatening to leave if you don’t get your way. This is a serious position with some amazing opportunities both for the volunteer and for STARFLEET itself. The volunteer who is chosen must behave professionally, be prepared to participate responsibly, and report monthly to the EC.
If you would like to volunteer, e-mail me at comms@sfi.org. Include your name, chapter, SCC number, and a short paragraph or two explaining why you believe yourself to be qualified for the position. I will also be contacting COs/XOs to ask them about members who volunteer. So with your application, please include the name and e-mail address of your CO or XO (or if you are a CO, then your RC…and if you’re an RC, then I’ll just ask Sal and Dave about you). Tell them to expect an e-mail from me…a non-response will not kill your chances, but it won’t help. So let your CO/XO know to e-mail me back as soon as they can.
The Council is being created soon. So I am setting the deadline for applications as April 30. No applications after that date will be considered.
My sincere thanks in advance to everyone who applies for this position. I’ll make the announcement to the lists as soon as a volunteer is selected.

Diana Rowland Book Fair
March 20th, 2010
Members of the USS CORSAIR had a rare treat on March 20th, 2010, when they got to sit down and talk with local author, Diana Rowland.
The setting was very intimate and allowed for a very lively and frank discussion not only on Diana Rowland’s adventures in life but the ups and downs of the publishing world.
Diana Rowland showed members in an interactive way how to develop characters, both primary and supporting, creating a scene and stressed how everyone needs conflict even if they don’t know it.
One topic that Diana Rowland mentioned was if you do decided to get into the writing game for profit – think again. You will need an agent (who will earn his 15%) and have to change your labor of love several times because the editors know what works, so check your pride at the door.
Afterwards Diana Rowland was kind of enough to sign several copies of her books for members and others at the Books-A-Million.
The event was such a success that the USS CORSAIR may support this style of event on a quarterly basis.
