Three crewmembers participated in National Novel Writing MonthOne successfully completed a 175-page (50,000-word) fan fiction. The others had fun trying to reach their goal.

The Cadets stationed aboard the USS CORSAIR are an integral part of the chapter. They maintain the Myspace account, actively post to forum boards, and have taken OTS and OCC, along with several other Starfleet Academy courses. Each month, one of the Cadets visits a nursing home with their school to perform skits to entertain the guests. Even the youngest member at 3 ½ years old solicited donations of fruit for a basket to donate to a local family. They are all honor students and take advanced level courses.

The Chapter embraces community service. The USS CORSAIR averages four or more community service activities a month including supporting local schools through donations of office supplies, collecting Box Tops for Education and soda can tabs. Individual members represent the chapter by working concession stands or ticket-taking at school events, volunteering at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, cleaning cat cages for the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society, and Pit Bull Rescue.

The USS CORSAIR held successful fundraisers throughout the year. This included:

Sponsor A Tribble” wherein the “sponsor” received a color picture card with a biography of their tribble, followed one week later with an emailed “thank-you for your donation” note from their tribble. Proceeds went to the Denham Springs Animal Shelter.

The USS CORSAIR rocked for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Each member of the crew took a shift in a rocking chair web simulcasted so others in Starfleet could keep tabs on the Chapter’s “24-hour goal” progress. The CO of the Chapter issued a challenge: if a certain amount of money was raised, she would go to the Louisiana Renaissance Festival in full Romulan garb.

Trekkin’ for a Cure” was the theme for the USS CORSAIR’s participation in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The crew was inspired by one of our own cancer survivors. The Junior members of the crew sold Raktajino and posed for pictures in uniforms with race participants to raise money for this worthwhile cause.
